Last spring, I was appointed as a member of the New York State Bar Association (“NYSBA”) Committee on Animals and the Law. The Committe published its first “Laws & Paws” newsletter last month which is available online here. The October newsletter contains an update of hot topics in animal law, an article on teen animal cruelty, a summary of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (“CITES”), an editorial regarding humane law enforcement, and the winning essay from last year’s animal law student writing competition. There is also a very thorough summary of animal law news.
In this blog a few months ago, I noted how much overlap there was with agriculture law and other types of law, including animal law. Though the committtee members are primarily interested in companion animal law issues, the committee does offer opinions on legislation and participates in activities concerning livestock.
