On yesterday’s post, I mentioned the idea of forming a book club in your community to discuss mainstream literature criticizing modern agriculture and discuss the misconceptions in the literature and how the agriculture community should address these misconceptions. For those of you who are interested in this, I am starting an agriculture book club that will read through these books and have online discussions.
The first book that will be discussed is Omnivore’s Dilemma. People of all viewpoints are welcome and would like to have the first online discussion around Mid-December. I’d be interested if I was able to keep up with the complete the books in a timely manner. Have a busy schedule but definitely want to read about ag. Also would like to read good books that highlight agriculture as positive.
Another good book that has both positives and negative aspects towards modern ag is “Deeply Rooted: Unconventional farmers in the age of agribusiness”
I hear you about the book schedule. Part of the reason why I started this is because Omnivore’s Dilemma has been on my book stand for the last 6 months. I need to get through it and sometimes community can help keep me on pace. Great idea on also talking about books that put agriculture in a positive light!
Are you contemplating a chapter or group of chapters per discussion or dissecting the book and its points in its entirety? If the latter, what is the time frame for having the book completely read? I have never participated in a book club but the issues pertaining to our food are becoming more contentious it seems.
Right now, I was thinking about discussing the book in its entirety — might be too difficult to manage chapter deadline. Tenatively, I was thinking that the first book club would visit online around mid-December to give folks plenty of time to get through the book. Open for suggestions on how we can all chat online about the book. Looking forward to discussing!
